Jumpstart’s Read for the Record

About

Join us for a National Celebration of Reading

Help Set a New World Record on October 4, 2012!

Presented in partnership with the Pearson Foundation, Jumpstart’s Read for the Record Campaign highlights the need for high quality early education in America by mobilizing adults and children to set a record for the largest shared reading. Join us September 27 through to the record setting day on October 4 to read and to support Jumpstart’s mission to work toward the day every child in America enters school prepared to succeed.

Each year, millions of adults and children gather on a single day to set a new reading record and to show their support for early literacy by joining Jumpstart’s Read for the Record. By reading Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad by Jacky Davis and David Soman on October 4, you’ll help to set a new world record for the greatest number of people reading the same book on the same day.

This year, for the first time, the celebration is extended – starting September 27 and leading right up to the record-setting day on Thursday, October 4 – giving record-breakers across the country greater opportunity to read and to support Jumpstart’s mission to work toward the day when every child in America enters school prepared to succeed.

In 2011, millions of people read Anna Dewdney’s Llama Llama Red Pajama and helped to set the latest overall reading record. Together you, along with parents and children reading in print and online throughout the United States, helped to break the overall record of over 2 million readers!

Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad

Lulu is so excited for the Bug Squad to come over for a playdate, and she has all kinds of things planned for them to do-right down to eating cupcakes. The cupcakes are special because each one has a candle that Lulu thinks everyone should blow out at exactly the same time.

But when things don’t go just the way Lulu planned, feelings are hurt and apologies are necessary. Sounds like a job for Ladybug Girl, who knows how to be brave and say she’s sorry, even when it isn’t easy.

About the Authors

Jacky Davis and David Soman are a husband and wife team. Inspired by their own children, they write the Ladybug Girl books together and Mr. Soman does the illustrations. Their daughter Lucy used to play dress up (her ladybug boots and antennae were her favorite costume) and make up games in the backyard. When their son, Sam, saw his sister in the illustrations for the first book, he asked where the book about Sammy was. Bumblebee Boy was born!

Who’s reading?

Each year, from Anchorage, Alaska, to the U.S. Virgin Islands, millions of adults and children gather to read a classic children’s book on a single day in the fall. In 2011, it was Anna Dewdney’s Llama Llama Red Pajama. Stay tuned for information about events happening across the country and around the world as together we read Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad on October 4, 2012!

Thanks to everyone who participated in breaking two World Reading Records in 2011! From Alaska to Florida and from Puerto Rico to Guam, millions of readers joined together on one day to set the record for the greatest number of people reading the same book in a single day. And last year, we broke a new record too- the most people who read the same book online in a single day!

About the Read for the Record Campaign

Read for the Record

Presented in partnership with the Pearson Foundation, Jumpstart’s Read for the Record annually encourages record-breakers to spread the word that reading with a child before he or she enters kindergarten can improve his or her chances of graduating from high school by as much as 30 percent. With high-profile local events that include civic leaders, teachers, and families; and the widespread support of leading education and literacy organizations, the campaign brings much-needed attention to the early literacy crisis and — in the process — showcases Jumpstart’s role in addressing this issue in U.S. preschools. About Jumpstart

Jumpstart

Every child deserves the chance to succeed, yet studies show that children from low-income neighborhoods are at a greater risk of school failure. Jumpstart is a national early education organization that helps these children develop the language and literacy skills they need for school, setting them on a path to close the achievement gap before it is too late. Since 1993, Jumpstart has trained nearly 25,000 college students and community volunteers to deliver its program to more than 100,000 preschool children nationwide. Jumpstart’s award-winning program holds a “Best in America” seal from Independent Charities of America. Jumpstart’s national sponsors include American Eagle Outfitters, AmeriCorps, Franklin Templeton Investments, and the Pearson Foundation. Join us to work toward the day every child in America enters school prepared to succeed. Learn more at www.jstart.org.
